The Ferrari F40 is a mid-engined lightweight supercar manufactured by Ferrari between 1987-1992 as a celebration of Ferrari's 40th year anniversary at the time. It was the last Ferrari with a turbocharged engine until the 2014 Ferrari California T. The car is equipped with a 2.9L twin-turbocharged Tipo F120A V8 engine and was at the time the most powerful and expensive car that Ferrari had ever sold to the public. Also, at the moment of its debut in 1987, this was the fastest road-legal car with its 323 kph. This car was the predecessor of the Ferrari F50 (1995-1997). Leonardo Fioravanti designed this car. Its predecessor was the Ferrari 288 GTO (1984-1987).
1,311 units of the F40 were made and it was the last car ever to be approved by Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari before he passed away in 1988. This was the world's fastest car from 1987 to 1991. A race spec version named the Ferrari F40 GTE competed in the BRP Global GT series from 1994 to 1996, in which it won the 4 Hours of Vallelunga. The race-spec version has never competed again.
